Western Scrub Jay Silk

$145.00

Wear the most beautiful blue in the state of California -- next to the ocean, of course! The Western scrub jay silk is patterned with graceful blue and grey tail feathers, spread for flight. This common bird is nothing short of extraordinary, known for its exceptional intelligence (their brain-to-body mass ratio rivals that of chimpanzees + cetaceans), their raw, sexy audacity, mischievousness, great foresight, and unapologetic confidence. Scrub jays can remember locations of up to 200 food caches, and are good at planning for the future. While they are quite assertive, this animated bird also exhibits empathy - as they are known to hold vocal funerals for fellow jays. Scrub jays have planted a lot of our oak trees here in California - they make their presence known in more ways than one! The Western scrub jay range extends from southern Washington to central Texas and central Mexico. On the Central Coast of California, it is mainly found in chaparral, coastal sage scrub, and oak woodland. Jays eat mostly insects and fruit during spring and summer, and switch to nuts and seeds during fall and winter. Populations of jays that evolved in oak habitats developed stouter, more hooked beaks adept for driving acorns open. They also eat small animals including lizards and sometimes nesting birds. They can live up to fifteen years! The Western scrub jay is quite common, and not considered to be a threatened or endangered species. This 20"x70" textile is printed on 100% silk chiffon and has a delicate hand-rolled hem.
